Erbil/Sinjar — Nearly six years after the Yazidi genocide, up to 200,000 Yazidis are still displaced, many living in camps only hours away from their homeland of Sinjar, in Iraq’s Ninewa Governorate. Despite previous low levels of return, June 2020 saw a marked increase in the return of displaced families to Sinjar.
Iraq faces a multifaceted water crisis that impacts water supply and quality throughout the country. This crisis is expected to persist and may have implications at the humanitarian, economic, security and social levels (including population movements).
Erbil — As of 30 June 49,109 confirmed cases of COVID-19 had been reported in Iraq, representing a more than tenfold increase in cases since early May. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently confirmed more than 1 million cases of COVID-19 in the 22 countries of its Eastern Mediterranean Region, calling this a “very concerning milestone”.
Erbil – Decades of conflict in Iraq have had a devastating effect on the country and led to deeper divisions along sectarian lines. As Iraq transitions towards a post-conflict environment, the government and the international community are invested in stabilization activities that are essential to maintaining community security and bolstering the recovery process.
Erbil — As of 13 May 3,032 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 115 deaths had been reported in Iraq. Measures that the Government of Iraq has taken to curb the spread of COVID-19 — including curfews, school closures, and restrictions on travel into and within the country — have led to reduced operating hours or the closure of many small businesses. While the government has started relaxing restrictions in certain locations, the economic impact of COVID-19 is expected to be severe.
Baghdad — The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that the increase in cases of COVID-19 in the Eastern Mediterranean, including Iraq, is of particular and great concern. 2,818 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 110 deaths had been reported in Iraq by 11 May 2020.
