Erbil — Iraq has one of the largest populations of persons with disabilities in the world. Persons with disabilities and their representative organisations in Iraq are increasingly being asked to advocate for their rights to their government and humanitarian and development agencies. Yet, there has been limited opportunities for persons with disabilities from various governorates in Iraq to develop a strong and comprehensive understanding of their rights.
Erbil — During the conflict with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), more than 6 million Iraqis were displaced from their homes. Nearly four years after the official end of the ISIL conflict, hundreds of thousands of families have returned to their areas of origin; however, an estimated 1.2 million individuals remain in displacement.
Baghdad — Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which employ roughly half of Iraq’s workers, were severely impacted by the conflict with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the resulting economic slowdown undermined the gradual progress SMEs had made toward recovery, exacerbating vulnerabilities and increasing economic challenges for Iraqi businesses and their workers.
Basra – Environmental degradation over the last 10 years has severely damaged Iraq’s agricultural sector. Worsening water scarcity and quality has left the sector unable to support sufficient and sustainable livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, where it has long been the main workforce employer.
Forced migration due to environmental degradation is increasingly felt in the southern governorates of Iraq. A decrease in water flow and water quality means the agricultural sector is unable to guarantee sufficient and sustainable livelihood opportunities in rural areas. Cities in the south, including Basra, are struggling to absorb the increasing influx of population, further magnifying the social fragility of urban locations.
Baghdad – Necessary measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 combined with volatile oil prices and a decrease in the value of the Iraqi dinar brought an end to two years of sustained economic growth in Iraq, heavily impacting individuals and communities affected by conflict and displacement.
Erbil — To measure the impact of COVID-19 on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Iraq, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Trade Center (ITC) conducted a panel study of 716 SMEs, covering June 2020 to June 2021.
Since the 1960s, housing, land and property (HLP) challenges faced by the people of Iraq have varied throughout different waves of conflict and displacements. These problems worsened during the period of conflict with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) between 2014 and 2017 when the widespread destruction, looting and illegal seizure and confiscation of housing was a key strategy employed by ISIL. This was a major factor leading to the displacement of around 6 million Iraqi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Trade Center (ITC) assessed the economic impact of COVID-19 on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Iraq between February 2020 and June 2021. Four rounds of surveys tracked the effect of border closures and lockdowns on revenue, production, and employment; accessibility of resources or ability to sell products; and mechanisms adopted to cope with the crisis.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) works with governments to facilitate legal and safe immigration. IOM does not offer alternatives to established immigration procedures. Fraudulent entities sometimes use IOM's name to advertise false offers for immigration.
